after a night of agony Giulia Mauri dies at 39 years old

The van’s travel was interrupted only when it hit the parapet of the bridge over the Botteniga before ending up in the water. But between the vehicle and the river there was a woman on a bicycle. The impact was dramatic: 39-year-old Giulia Mauri, resident not far from the crash site, was thrown a few meters before ending up inside the Botteniga. Emergency hospitalized at Ca’ Foncellodied on Tuesday morning.

The dynamics

The terrible accident occurred around 1pm on Monday in Viale della Repubblica near the intersection with Via Pisa. It was caused by a van from the operational headquarters of San Vendemiano della Site, a multinational that deals with infrastructure and networks and which carries out work on behalf of Enel in the province of Treviso. Driving the vehicle, which came from Villorba and was traveling in the direction of “Stiore”, was a 24-year-old from Treviso. According to what some eyewitnesses reported, the vehicle began to skid to the right; therefore without braking he would have invaded the cycle path passing between a tree and a post. At that moment the 39-year-old was passing through the space for bicycles and was hit directly. «I saw two vans – explains Francesco Scarpellino, one of the first people to help the woman – one started to skid, veering to the right, I heard the bang. At first I thought he had gone off the road alone and I went to the bridge to help. Then out of the corner of my eye I saw the woman who was lying face down. Together with another boy we catapulted in and pulled her out of the water.” A shock for everyone present.

The investigation

«I held her head – continues his story – while another girl gave her cardiac massage. We hope it was of some use, I pray that she can do it.” Local police, firefighters, divers and Suem 118 on site: pto allow rescuers to work safely, the West Road was blocked for more than two hours. Traffic was diverted onto nearby Via Pisa, but serious repercussions were had throughout the city. Just like a few days ago for a rear-end collision on the Put, but this time the accident is very serious. The 24-year-old, who got out of the van on his own two feet, immediately appeared in shock. “Was there really a woman?” these are the words he would have uttered before being taken to the hospital for checks. According to an initial reconstruction, the young man may have felt faint which caused him to lose control of the vehicle. «He seemed to be unconscious, I saw him lying on the steering wheel» says a colleague who was driving the next vehicle. The Treviso Prosecutor’s Office has opened an investigation into the dynamics. For now the alleged crime against the 24-year-old is that of serious and negligent road injuries.
