The mayor of Rimini: “Beaches, agriculture and cuts to the municipalities, everything postponed to the day after the European elections”

The mayor of Rimini Jamil Sadegholvaad comments on the electoral campaign for the next European elections. A fundamental electoral appointment beyond the competing Italian parties.

5 days before the vote for the European elections, it almost seems that all the interest is concentrated on…10 June. The elections the next day. Everything suspended for obvious electoral purposes: beaches, agriculture, even the already announced cuts to the municipalities virtuous on the PNRR.

It is the Italian electoral campaign, the most disappointing in history, with party leaders running only and in any case to measure their internal strength. Yet we vote for Europe, at the crossroads on many problems but above all at the crossroads on its nature, crushed as it is between international tensions, wars, economy, competition. And yes, there would be the elements to become passionate about. Let’s just think about the issue of competition, a founding mantra for Europe up until now.

The paradox is that the noble intent of competitiveness is evidently losing part of its meaning today, in the face of economic giants supported by entire non-European states.

State aid in Europe cannot be implemented (just think of what happened in Rimini regarding the airport) while global industrial and financial conglomerates are publicly subsidized by their states precisely to attack competition that is increasingly in difficulty.

The future of Europe touches the living flesh of our daily lives, it is not an abstruse element from everyday life or the terrain of ideological battles of political politics. How much could the Romagna Riviera and the province of Rimini benefit from the Adriatic Railway Corridor, a European infrastructure project, with the high-speed train that could connect Venice to Pescara?

The examples are many and they all come to the same conclusion: the European elections of 8 and 9 June are fundamental in themselves and not for the effects on the Italian parties, in this eternal electoral campaign in which everything, especially if complex or problematic, is postponed the next day.
