A record-breaking June 2nd for city of Velletri, who set a new world record, managing to create the Pizza in the shape of the largest Italian flag in the worlda culinary feat that combined taste and patriotism!
On the occasion of Republic Day, during the last day of Pizza Festival held at Velletri from May 30th to June 2nd, one was created pizza measuring 240 square meters in the Giovanni Scavo municipal sports field.
After having arranged wooden platforms covered with large sheets, pizza chefs from all over Italy and Europe prepared to season the pre-cooked bases placed on the sheets with the three colors of the Italian flag. During the great undertaking to entertain the numerous audiences who came to witness this important historical moment, the Festival, organized by Pro Loco Velitrae and Friends of Always Associationwith the contribution of Lazio Region and Lazio CREA, has given space to various extraordinary performances such as those of “Il Girasole” International Art Center, who performed aerial dance, followed by the silver medal at the 2015 world championships (in Hungary).
The historical fencing hall, late medieval and early Renaissance “King of Swords” delighted the audience with a courteous sporting two-handed sword duel, the contribution of the Umberto Cavola Musical Band who opened and concluded the world pizza record challenge by singing the Italian anthem, and finally two friendly stilt walkers entertained even the little ones, enthusiastic about admiring and tasting such a large pizza!
At the end of the enterprise the Mayor Ascanio Cascella and the Municipal Agriculture Councilor Cristian Simonetticonfirmed with great pride the success of the enterprise entered into Guinness World Record, measuring the largest Italian flag-shaped pizza in the world. The proclamation took place in front of a packed grandstand, while theCouncilor for Agriculture of the Lazio Region Giancarlo Righini, the MEP Nicola Procaccinithe new head of the secretariat of Undersecretary Durigon, Tony Bruognoloand several members of the Cascella Council, including the deputy mayor Chiara Ercoli, and several city councilors, including Debora Rossi, who actively participated in the entire event.

The Festival ended late in the evening with the accompaniment of street artists and Fabrizio Gaetani’s cabaret.
With this extraordinary achievement Velletri has entered history, demonstrating that the emblem of Italian culinary art, pizza, can be transformed into a symbol of unity and national pride.
