Calabria, the “beach resort case” hits the League. Appeals for unity after criticism

«The League can only support, as it has always done, the interests of seaside resorts, investments and existing employment, improving it if possible»: this assumption, put in black and white by, will suffice Giacomo Francesco Saccomanno, to get everyone in the Northern League to agree? After a similar initiative by the regional councilor Pietro Molinaro, it is now the regional commissioner who is trying to put the pieces of a puzzle back together which was ruined by the reactions to the resolution of the Occhiuto council, which effectively “locks down” the existing state concessions

Taken away

If Forza Italia and FdI immediately supported the initiative of the executive – the first Region in the country – the League immediately sent out signs of war, first of all with the leader Matteo Salvini according to whom «unfortunately it cannot be a single Region that block the Bolkestein directive” which imposes public tenders for concessions. In fact, Calabria has decided not to apply the Bolkenstein directive by virtue of the detected “non-scarcity of the beach resource”, allowing the current concessionaires to continue to operate and paving the way for the tendering of portions of the current beaches.

The neckline

While the government is working on a law that clarifies the framework (for Salvini “it can also be approved next week”), it is the developments on the political scene that worry the Northern League. Certainly tempers are overheated by the campaign for the European elections on 8 and 9 June, but observers cannot fail to notice a disconnect between the national and local levels of the League. Undersecretary Claudio Durigon and parliamentarians Simona Loizzo, Tilde Minasi and Domenico Furgiuele have been tough on Occhiuto in recent days, like Salvini. Less so are Molinaro (“the regional council’s resolution on concessions was inspired by the League and we are proud of it”) and now Saccomanno, according to whom “the question of the seaside resorts is becoming a moment of political conflict when, instead, it should be a time together to protect the many families and companies that have been working for years to allow adequate use of our beaches. It is not important – adds the regional coordinator – whether the percentage of use of our coasts is 10% or 29%. What is important is that the difference is free and can be used by anyone.”
