The Siope archive allows us to draw up a ranking of most fined cities in Italy. In pole position we find Milan, with 146 million euros collected for infringements reported to Milanese motorists.

He places himself in second position Brescia with 12.4 million, while in third place (another Lombard city) Bergamo with 7.5 million collections. Disputes of €108 each against €90 in Pavia, €73 in Mantua, €65 in Como, €63 in Bergamo and Brescia, just €36 in Lecco and Varese, €32 in Cremona, €31 in Sondrio, €28 in Monza and finally only €11 in Lodi.

Record in a small village in the Varese area

During the analysis of the most contested traffic infringement fines in Italy we cannot help but pay attention to three (very small) Lombard capitals which however record a high number Of sanctions (especially when compared to the number of inhabitants).

In pole position among the smallest but also most fined capitals we find You lie (in the province of Varese) which despite its three thousand souls would collect slightly less than its capital Varese (income of around 2 million euros for the fines charged to the inhabitants).

Among the other Lombard capitals with less than 4 thousand inhabitants, the following stands out: Vellezzo Bellini (in the province of Pavia) which grossed more than 3,398 inhabitants 986 thousand eurosWhile Bellagio (province of Como), which with just 3,573 inhabitants has almost obtained from the pockets of motorists 899 thousand euros.

Contesting a fine: is it always worth it?

Contesting a fine is not always convenient. With the new systems for detecting traffic violations it is difficult for there to be an error. Attempting an appeal – depending on the case – could be costly both in terms of time and money.

However, it is possible to appeal if some of them occur particular conditionssuch as being fined by a non-approved speed camera, due to possible inconsistencies transcribed in the report (such as incorrect personal data), notification arrived late, report for a vehicle sold.

To submit your appeal you can make a request to Prefect (simpler process) or al Justice of the Peace (a more complex path with the need to prove what is claimed).
