TRENT. It will soon have a new headquarters there “Canteen of Providence” in Trentocurrently hosted informer convent of the Capuchin friars in Cervara. Managed, after the farewell of the friars last summer, by Diocese of Trento through the Caritas Foundationthe Mensa will be moved from next autumn to the current one Caritas Listening Center, in via Giusti. This structure will soon undergo important adaptation works, in order to be able to host a refectory from September capable of continuing to welcome people in need, with a new area also intended for families, new kitchens and more adequate service spaces.
The decision to move the Canteen of Providence from its historic location, where it was founded thirty years ago, was communicated this morning, June 1st, to the volunteers who have always taken turns in preparing and distributing the evening meal, currently benefiting, on average, 120 people, mostly homeless. The delegate of the Testimony and Social Commitment Area was present at the meeting Don Mauro Leonardelli and the director of the Caritas Foundation Fabio Chiari.
The move of the canteen will allow the Capuchin friars, as they expressly requested in recent months, to dispose of the entire property complex, allocating the former convent for the purposes they deem most appropriate. In this regard, it should also be noted that the hypothesis initially put forward of a loan management of the former convent by the Diocese for further pastoral purposes, in addition to the canteen already taken over, did not materialise. The religious will donate to the Diocese, for the new structure, the means and all the equipment currently in use for the canteen of the former convent.
In via Giusti the poorest people will continue to knock on the door of the “Mensa della Provvidenza”, whose name will therefore not change. Out of fidelity to its history, but also to indicate the essential characteristic of a truly providential service, because it has grown thanks to the generosity of those who donate raw materials and offer economic support and by virtue of that small army of volunteers who have always provided their work in cooking or serving meals. They will be – it was confirmed in the meeting this morning, June 1st – the backbone of the Mensa also for the future.
