Five hundred students in Piazza dei Miracoli greet the 850 years of the Tower of Pisa

PISA – A fitting end to five’s visit to Pisa – Iglesias, Hangzou (China), Angers (France), Unna (Germany) and Jericho (Palestine) – of the eleven cities twinned with ours. beyond Saint Tropez linked to Pisa not by twinning but by a profound friendship for the common veneration of San Torpè. which had the very famous protagonist Piazza dei Miracoli, where around 500 students had gathered of the lower secondary schools of all the comprehensive institutes of the city, including the Istituto Paritario Santa Caterina.

A great celebration full of joy and happiness, which made it possible to achieve the dual objective, on the one hand, of strengthen cooperative relations and relaunch cultural exchanges with the twinned cities after the long break due to the pandemic and, on the other, of celebrate worthily.

the celebrations of the 850th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of the leaning bell tower, thanks to the contribution of the children of each comprehensive institute in the city (Fucini, Toniolo, Fibonacci, Galilei, Gamerra, Pisano and Tongiorgi, as well as the Santa Caterina private institute), who brought testimony, telling the story of the Tower, among curiosities and anecdotes, while between one speech and another the students sang the famous musical refrain “Long live the Tower of Pisa…”. An event which also saw the students, positioned on the lawn of Piazza del Duomo between the Baptistery and the medieval walls – with some of them supporting the three flags of Pisa, Italy and the European Union – listen to the anthem of Mameli and the Hymn to Joy and then receiving greetings full of positivity and expectations towards a future that will necessarily see them as protagonists, from the Mayor of Pisa Michele Conti, of the Councilor for Schools and Twinning Riccardo Buscemiand the representative of the Regional School Office Valeria Raglianti, as well as the Delegates of the aforementioned six host cities.

The final party followed Friday 31 May in which the delegates of the twinned cities visited the monuments of Piazza del Duomo and took part in the Twin Cities forum at Palazzo Gambacorti, in the Balearic Hall, on the theme “New methods, perspectives and opportunities for twinning in the digital age“, to share together contributions, ideas, proposals and experiences of cultural exchange, a debate in which operators from schools, tourism and culture also took part, while at the end of the work the delegations moved to the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo where the Cappella Musicale of the Cathedral welcomed the guests with a short choral performance, with particular thanks to the students of the Matteotti Hotel Institute of Pisa, who took care of welcoming the guests during the three days of their stay in the city.
