Pescara Jazz, from 10 to 21 July

The 52nd edition of Pescara Jazz, with the artistic direction of M° Angelo Valori and organized by the Pescaresi Events Authority, will be held from 10 to 21 July at the Arena del Porto Turistico – Marina di Pescara and at the Teatro Massimo. As in the tradition of the festival, the program features some of the best musicians on the world scene, combined with some rising stars of international jazz.
“Once again – declares the artistic director Angelo Valori – Pescara Jazz offers some of the most interesting proposals on the international scene, together with some promises now universally recognized in the world of jazz. We find some historic musicians such as Terence Blanchard, proposed in a very particular formation with string quartet, and the legendary group Take 6, winner of numerous Grammy awards, together with Terri Lyne Carrington and Hamid Drake. But we also have the best young musicians, such as Lakecja Benjamin and Amaro Freitas, new proposals for our festival, who will fascinate the audience with their sounds. These international proposals are joined by some of the best Italian musicians, who present the international maturity of Italian jazz. A kaleidoscopic festival waiting to be discovered with its many proposals.”

It was not easy, after the impossibility of using the Teatro D’Annunzio, to find a suitable solution to host important concerts such as those that characterize the festival programme, but we succeeded also thanks to the availability of the Marina di Pescara and the Teatro Massimo. An edition that once again brings high culture to our city, together with an important tourism industry.”
To open the Festival, Wednesday 10th Julyto theArena del Porto Turistic – Marina di Pescaraa double concert: Bokanté, Michael League group, leader of Snarky Puppy, shared with his two bandmates Chris McQueen and Bob Lanzetti and Malika Tirolien, eight musicians from four different continents; following Ada Montellanico Quintetguest Giovanni Falzonewho presents his new project “Canto Proibito”. Thursday 11 July, Arena del Porto Turistico – Marina di Pescara, the quartet of the Abruzzo guitarist Franco Finucci with guest Rosario Giuliani on sax. To follow the Fusion Project of the guitarist Fabio Mariani. Friday 12 July, Nausicadialogue between two similar musicians like Simona Severini and Jacopo Ferrazzafollowing, the Cuban group, The Real Project Cuba. Saturday 13 July, Arena of the Tourist Port – Marina di Pescara, Marcellus By Leonardo presents his first recording project as a leader, “The Magic Box”, with a guest a jazz legend, the saxophonist Rick Margitza. Following, Khalab who returns to the stage in a live band formation, to present his latest album “Layers” in an intimate and direct formula. Monday 15 Julyto the Teatro Massimoan original production by Pescara Jazz, i Take 6an extraordinary vocal group that revolutionized the way of singing a cappella, meet the Medit Orchestra directed by Angelo Valori. Tuesday 16 July, Arena del Porto Turistico – Marina di Pescara, Hamid Drake “Turiya: Honoring Alice Coltrane”. Hamid Drake, African-American jazz drummer with a project dedicated to one of the symbols of music without borders: Alice Coltrane.

Wednesday 17 July, Tourist Port Arena – Marina di Pescara, Chiara Civello band, followed by the drummer Amedeo Ariano presents his new album “Afrodance” with a band made up of some of the most interesting Italian musicians.

Thursday 18 July, to the Teatro Massimoa double concert not to be missed, Mark Lettierione of the most acclaimed guitarists of the new generation and member of Snarky Puppy and othersTerence Blanchard E-Collective & Atom String Quartet. A Grammy and Oscar worthy artist! Terence Blanchard is one of the most prominent and acclaimed trumpeters in jazz today, also as a soundtrack composer: his music for Spike Lee’s film, Blackkklansman, was awarded a Grammy and a nomination for the most prestigious film award.

Friday 19 July, Arena of the Tourist Port – Marina di Pescara, Matteo Mancuso, one of the brightest stars of the new guitar scene and to follow, the American drummer Terri Lyne Carrington. Saturday 20 July, Arena del Porto Turistico – Marina di Pescara, the Brazilian pianist Amaro Freitas, rising star of Carioca and international jazz and to follow, Flavio Boltro and Simone Sala Double Drums Sextet, a sextet with the particular formation with double drums.

To close the 2024 edition of Pescara Jazz, Arena of the Tourist Port – Marina di Pescara, Lakecia Benjamin, three Grammy Award nominations, one of the new international jazz stars, with traditional sounds and a blend of hip hop, soul, R&B, funk. Accompanying her on stage are Oscar Perez on piano, Elias Bailey on double bass, EJ Strickland on drums.
