Calabria, sailing boat capsizes in the sea: 50 migrants missing

Around 50 migrants are missing after a sailboat capsized about one hundred miles off the coast of the Calabria. The 12 surviving migrants, including a pregnant woman, were rescued by a merchant ship which transferred them to a Coast Guard vessel, which then landed in Roccella Ionica. One of them, however, died immediately after the landing operations. However, only one body was recovered: it is the body of a woman who died after falling into the sea.

The search for the other missing people is still underway. Both the Coast Guard and Frontex assets have been prepared. Although at the moment none of them have yet been recovered. The activity, reports a note from the Coast Guard, was started following a “may-day” launched by a French pleasure craft, sailing approximately 120 meters from the Italian coast, on the edge of the SAR areas of competence of the Greece and Italy. The migrants on board the sailing boat that capsized had left a few days ago from a port in the Türkiye. Meanwhile, the Locri Public Prosecutor’s Office, informed of what happened, is coordinating the investigations to understand what happened.
