The In&motion airbag for motorcyclists arrives in Italy

In&motion is a French scaleup that develops innovative technology underlying the wearable airbags designed for motorcyclists, skiers, and for those who go horseback riding.

The technology is made up of both the actual product which has been on the market for about 5 years and the company’s ability to constantly collect data relating to the various cases, aggregate data that it collects through the device itself, to continue to improve the product that already today it has the ability to react and protect itself in almost all cases in which accidents or falls occur.

After gaining the trust of over 80 thousand motorcyclists in France and Germany now In&motion is aiming for Italy, in collaboration with Tucanourbano, a brand owned by the Mandelli company which was born as a bicycle manufacturer but which in recent years has acquired various brands, including Tucanourbano, expanding its activities also in the field of motorized two-wheelers.

The product, in its version that integrates In&motion technology with Tucanourbano, takes the form of a specially designed jacket that can be used both under a more traditional motorcyclist jacket and as a stand alone product and is available in both the version for men and for users women, it’s called AirScud.

Remi Thomas, co-founder and CEO of In&motion tells Startupbusiness: “The company was born about 10 years ago, the first years were dedicated to the development of the product which has been on the market for five years, now our goal is to conquer the Italian market together with partner Tucanourbano we have developed the solution which can already be purchased at the price of around 300 euros to which is added a subscription of 12 euros per month which allows users to constantly receive updates and support”.

In&motion already has a turnover of around 10 million euros, produces profits and has raised 25 million euros in financing both in the form of debt and equity. Among the investors there is also 360Capital: “We are increasingly looking at deeptech and In&motion as well as having its own sophisticated technology also has recurring revenue due to the subscription that users make in order to receive the emergency service and updates”, says Emanuele Levi, partner of the investment fund.

“We use the data collected in aggregate form – adds Thomas – we currently record around 15 incidents a day among our 80 thousand users and with this information, also thanks to the use of artificial intelligence, we are able to constantly improve both the product and his ability to respond and therefore to guarantee the right protection. Today in Europe there are no laws that oblige you to wear an airbag as happens for example with a helmet but we notice that more and more motorcyclists decide to equip themselves with the system because they understand its function which we can define as literally vital, both on the road and on the track, in competitions today everyone uses forms of protection of this type, not necessarily our product, but there is a sensitivity that concerns all motorcyclists who participate in competitions at various levels”.

The business of In&motion, a company that employs around 80 people, is so solid that Thomas admits that there is an annual loss of around 5% of subscriptions, which comes almost exclusively from people who have decided, for one reason or another the other, to stop riding a motorbike.

Marco Biollo, managing director of Mandelli, during the presentation event of the partnership with In&motion and the AirScud product, highlighted how this partnership is strategic in the development of the Tucanourbano brand which today responds to the needs of motorcyclists in every season and helps to increase the safety and comfort of those who travel by car or scooter.

Among users of the device too motorcyclists who have competition experience such as Marco Melandri who has raced in both MotoGP and Superbikes and Jacopo Cerruti who runs motorcycle rally races and who confessed that he now feels much less safe if he doesn’t wear the device. Furthermore, In&motion also has a collaboration agreement with Liberty Rider, the app that provides information and assistance services to motorcyclists which can be associated with AirScud and acts as a sort of guardian angel capable of tracking every dangerous situation, fall, accident and in the most serious cases also to automatically send help.
