Confirmed today, May 22, by the Court of Cassation, the life sentence for Claudio Dettori, a 25-year-old from Sassari accused of the murder of Antonio Fara, a 47-year-old bartender killed with a hammer in his apartment in Sassari in April 2021.

The Supreme Court rejected the appeal presented by the defendant’s defense lawyer, Giuseppe Onorato, definitively sentencing him to the maximum sentence.

At the time of the crime, Dettori, homeless, had been a guest at Antonio Fara’s house for a couple of months. On April 22, 3 years ago, the bartender was found dead in his apartment in the center of Sassari, killed by blows with a hammer.

From the first moment the investigators’ suspicions fell on Dettori. Before escaping, the young man had telephoned the police to report a possible murder in Fara’s house. He was then tracked down and arrested late in the evening in a garden on the outskirts of Sassari.

On 25 July 2022 he was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Assize Court of Sassari. Conviction also confirmed by the Court of Appeal, which subjected the accused to a psychiatric evaluation which declared him capable of understanding and will.

“Many questions remain open, starting from the reason for the phone call made by Dettori the morning after Fara’s death, and then the motive, which remained completely unexplained after the hypothesis of robbery had been dropped from the first degree – comments the lawyer Onorato – And again, the apparent opposite psychiatric assessments on my client are perplexing. But anyway, the Supreme Court has had its say. Now we will evaluate whether to turn to the European Court in Strasbourg”.
