Enna, 22 May 2024 – Giovanni Giarrizzo is the new General Secretary of the Fai-Cisl Agrigento Caltanissetta Enna. He was elected by the territorial board of the CISL agri-food federation meeting in Pergusa, Enna.

Agricultural expert and union leader, Giovanni Giarrizzo, 37 years old, has also gained experience as a collaborator of the local CISL as an expert in the primary sector and will be supported in the Secretariat by Hind Farah, a trade unionist of Moroccan origins with experience in the Anolf of Caltanissetta. “I thank the organization for the trust it has shown – said Giarrizzo – and I plan to immediately start teamwork in the interest of workers in all the sectors within our competence, well present in our territories, reserving the right to expand the Secretariat of a further member with the next congress phase”.

The new manager takes over from Carmelo Cimino, who is close to fulfilling his pension requirements: “I am proud – said the outgoing Secretary – to leave room for the generational change necessary in the Federation to continue to grow and take root in the territory”. Carmela Petralia, General Secretary of the CISL of Agrigento Caltanissetta Enna, also took part in the work of the Board of Directors and underlined: “There are many challenges to face with the due protagonism of the union, starting with the fight against gangmastering and the typical problems of internal areas , with industrial and productive desert, excessive land consumption, hydrogeological instability, youth emigration: we are certain that the role of the FAI in overcoming these critical issues will be decisive”. While Adolfo Scotti, General Secretary of Fai-Cisl Sicily, underlined: “Our task is first of all to negotiate to improve the lives of workers and their families: we ask regional politics to address a series of priorities with us, I am thinking for example of the security, legality, but also the relaunch of the reclamation consortia, indebted for 150 million, and the forestry reform, which will cost 48 million without meeting the expectations of our foresters”.

The work was coordinated and concluded by the General Secretary of the national Fai-Cisl, Onofrio Rota, who after thanking Carmelo Cimino for the work carried out in recent years, underlined: “The role of the union in this complex territory must be relaunched, with a notable agricultural vocation yet lacking strategic infrastructures and services. However, a lot of political short-sightedness is the same that we find in the rest of Italy: in agriculture, as in environmental work, there is a lack of generational turnover and a lack of structural funding, yet the work of our ‘green suits’ will be increasingly strategic for food sovereignty , the protection of the territory and the sustainable growth of the country. One of the consequences, for example, is that after abandoning a true forest policy we import over 80% of wood and do not adequately develop the supply chains connected to agri-food and land reclamation and forestation work. But our role is not just to report, it is to make proposals to raise the quality of public interventions and guide the actions of companies towards maximum social responsibility”.
