Amalfi coast lemon PGI, ‘imprint’ to guarantee authenticity – Campania

In the council chamber of the Municipality of Vietri sul Mare, on the initiative of Confagricoltura Salerno, the results of the research carried out by prof were presented. Luigi Lucini of the Catholic University of Milan (Piacenza branch) on the sfusato lemon from Amalfi. The markers that determine a real digital fingerprint have been identified, which identifies the Costa d’Amalfi PGI lemon, differentiating it from all other similar lemons but outside the production area. In practice, the chemical compounds that characterize the authenticity of the product and which could be used to protect the authenticity and integrity of the production have been identified. Present at the meeting were producers and, via videoconference, Professor Lucini.

For the occasion, Confagricoltura Salerno also presented the Lemonchain project relating to traceability which some companies producing Costa d’Amalfi PGI lemons, thanks to the Ice agency, will implement to acquire a greater competitive advantage over national and foreign competition. In practice, companies will trace the most significant points of the production chain – to directly describe the characteristics and uniqueness of Costa d’Amalfi PGI lemons – and thanks to a QR Code (or other Smart Tag) easily scannable by the consumer they will be able to enhance the product and tell its story.
