Six days of meetings, presentations and guided tours in Ragusa, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of CIRS Ragusa

From 24 to 29 June 2024, Ragusa, Sicily, will host the third edition of Man and Karst in Sicily, an international scientific conference dedicated to the knowledge, enhancement and protection of the karst landscape and its ecosystem.

The event, organized on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the birth of CIRS Ragusa, will take place at the San Vincenzo Ferreri Auditorium, in the heart of Ragusa Ibla, a UNESCO heritage site for its baroque beauty.

The conference will address various topics related to the karst world, including geomorphology, hydrogeology, speleology, archeology and paleontology, biospeleology and ecology, vulnerability and use of the karst landscape, mining in karst areas and karst geohazards.

Contributions may be presented in English or Italian, in the form of an oral presentation (maximum duration of 15 minutes) or a poster, subject to selection by the scientific committee.

The conference program includes, in addition to the scientific sessions, also a series of events and guided tours, including the SpeleoMedit exhibition, dedicated to the conservation and documentation of Mediterranean caves, a visit to the Tabuna asphalt mine, and a series of excursions to places of naturalistic and historical-cultural interest, such as the Pantalica Nature Reserve (also a UNESCO heritage site), the Pipistrelli and Monello caves, and a visit to the archaeological site of Noto Antica.

The registration fee for the conference includes participation in the scientific sessions, visits and events scheduled for 24, 25 and 26 June, as well as participation in the party celebrating the 50th anniversary of CIRS Ragusa.

The excursions scheduled for June 27, 28 and 29 are optional and require an additional participation fee.

To participate in the conference it is necessary to register by filling out the registration form available on the CIRS Ragusa website (www.cirs-ragusa.org). On the website you can also find further useful information about the event, such as directions to reach Ragusa from Catania airport, the accommodation and restaurant options available in the city, and recommendations for cave visits (such as example the use of trekking shoes, a sun hat and camp clothing, as well as the obligation to use a torch during cave visits).

Man and Karst 2024 in Sicily represents an important opportunity for meeting and discussion between experts and enthusiasts of the karst world, as well as an opportunity to enhance and promote the natural and cultural heritage of Sicily.
