L’AQUILA – Friday 10 May at 6.00 pm in the auditorium of the “Casella” music conservatory, The Eagle for life will celebrate 20 years of activity with an event open to the public, presented by Rai journalist Andrea Fusco and the impeccable prêt à penser Mauro Pansini.

“L’Aquila per la Vita” is a third sector organization established in February 2004, with the aim of supporting the clinical and research activities of the Medical Oncology Operational Unit of L’Aquila, in particular with regards to therapies supportive, palliative and home care.

Over the years, “L’Aquila per la Vita” has carried out numerous projects. These are the most significant:

Activation of a Home Oncology Unit with related Operations Centre.

Financing of contracts for oncologists and scholarships for physiotherapists and psychologists.

Financing of 2 researcher positions at the Department of Applied Clinical and Biotechnological Sciences of the University of L’Aquila.

Financing of master’s degrees, refresher courses and conferences for nurses and physiotherapists.

Activation of the “Home Care Monitoring” telemedicine project, in collaboration with the SPEE group, for the monitoring of patients at home and the management of emergencies. Computerization of the Medical Oncology Operating Unit. Purchase of 6 cars for home oncology consultations. Purchase of diagnostic equipment for home monitoring of patients.

Purchase of home care equipment and devices for the prevention of side effects of chemotherapy. Purchase of televisions for hospital rooms.

The activity of L’Aquila per la Vita was entirely financed by donations and the organization of events, without any contribution from public bodies.

Since May 2005, within the Medical Oncology Unit of L’Aquila, a working group called “Supportive Care Task Force” has been established, dedicated to Palliative Care. The group is made up of three oncologists, a psychologist, a physiotherapist, a dietician and consultant psychiatrists, infectious disease specialist, diabetologist, sonographer and neurophysiopathologist.

From June 2005 to April 2009, 1,142 patients were followed for a total of 1,492 hospitalizations.

In August 2006, a Home Oncology Unit was activated at home level, made up of four oncologists, two neurologists, two psychologists, a physiotherapist and an ultrasound technician; For its activity, this Unit has at its disposal 6 cars, equipment for monitoring patients (electrocardiograph, ultrasound, portable spirometer and Holter, infusion pumps, pulse oximeters, etc.) and a communication network between the various operators with handheld computers , through which it is possible to manage a computerized medical record.

The “Home Oncology” project was conducted with the aim of creating true home hospitalization; procedures that otherwise would have required hospitalization were carried out at home.

Great attention was given to the neurological problems of the patients, with the inclusion of a neuro-oncologist in the home team, thanks to the “Attilio Messina” scholarship. This activity was guaranteed by the collaboration with the Neurophysiopathology Operating Unit.

As of May 8, 2014, 772 families were followed for a total of 21,756 home services. A constant growth trend has been recorded over the years regarding the number of home care services/year.

– In April 2014, 2 fixed-term university researcher contracts were financed for two oncologists for the three-year period 2014-2017 (renewable for another two years), aimed at research in the sector of palliative and supportive care in oncology.

– In June 2014 L’Aquila per la Vita activated a supportive therapy and palliative care clinic within the Medical Oncology Unit of the San Salvatore Hospital in L’Aquila.

– In the first months of 2015, the Association financed, in collaboration with the chair of Oncological Dermatology of the University of L’Aquila, a project aimed at the prevention and treatment of melanoma and supportive therapies in patients affected or recovered from this pathology . This project involved the financing of two scholarships: one for a psychologist who follows patients in follow-up for melanoma who have developed psychological problems; one for dermatologist engaged in melanoma prevention activities.

During 2015, a weekly clinic was activated within the L’Aquila Police Headquarters in which preventive visits are carried out, completely free of charge, by law enforcement personnel (State Police – Carabinieri – Penitentiary Police – Financial Police – State Forestry Corps). As part of this project, an innovative clinic dedicated to the management of skin toxicity from chemotherapy and new biological drugs was activated within the Oncological Dermatology Unit.

– April 2014 third “Augusto nel Mondo” scholarship (Nomads) Training program for healthcare personnel from third world countries on palliative and home care.

– December 2014 “Simone Marini” scholarship for best specialization thesis in Oncology.

– February 2015 Dermatology clinic dedicated to the management of skin toxicity from chemotherapy and new biological drugs.

– December 2015 “Mobile Health – Care System” project with contribution from the Carispaq Foundation.

– June 2016 purchase of machinery for the “Female Rehabilitation” project.

– December 2016 second “Simone Marini” scholarship for best specialization thesis in Oncology.

– December 2016 project “Dermatological Clinic for the Management of Adverse Events to Antineoplastic Therapies” in collaboration with UOSD General and Oncological Dermatology.

– March 2017 refinancing of researcher contracts for the two-year period 2017-2019.

– December 2017 financing no. 2 scholarships for the implementation of the project “Psychological Emergency Response for Oncology Patients 2018-2019”

-January 2019 renewal n. 2 Scholarships relating to the project “Psychological Emergency Response for Oncology Patients 2019-2020.

-July 2019 renewal of the “Dermatological Clinic for the “Management of adverse events to antineoplastic therapies” project in collaboration with UOSD General and Oncological Dermatology.

-May 2020 purchase donated Mylab X8eXP model ultrasound system

to the UOC of Infectious Diseases (Prof. Alessandro Grimaldi) at the San Salvatore Hospital.

-October 2020 purchase of protective material (FFP2-FFP3 masks; disposable gowns; air sanitizers; protective glasses; etc.) donated to the Infectious Diseases, Anesthesia and Resuscitation and Pneumology UOC.

-January 2021 renewal n. 2 Scholarships relating to the project “Psychological Emergency Response for Oncology Patients 2021-2022.

February 2021 Euro Intensive Care Project for the strengthening of n. 4 intensive care beds at the San Salvatore hospital in L’Aquila.
