Pride Month 2024: all the events scheduled in Italy: from Milan to Rome

June is conventionally Pride month, in which the culture and rights of the LGBTQIA+ community are celebrated, and in general love in every form. Also this year in Italy, events and processions are planned in numerous Italian cities, which will not stop in the month of June, but will also continue in July, August, September and October, as reported by Onda Pride on its official website. But why is June the month dedicated to gay pride?

Why is June Pride Month?

Pride is celebrated in June in memory of the Stonewall riots, considered one of the most important moments in the history of the gay movement in the United States. On the night between 27 and 28 June 1969 the police raided the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in the heart of New York’s West Village. But that evening and for the following week, despite what happened following the frequent raids that were carried out in gay clubs, those present decided to take a stand against what was real oppression by the Police. It is not clear what triggered the revolt, but during the days of the Stonewall riots, over 2 thousand people demonstrated against the police and in total around twenty of them were arrested.

The Pride calendar in Italy

Even in Italy, as mentioned, there are many events that are celebrated in this month and which pay homage to the LGBTQIA+ community, that is, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersexual and asexual people, with the + sign which includes all those identities gender and non-heterosexual and non-binary sexual orientations that do not fall within the letters of the acronym. In June, almost 30 Pride events are scheduled in the main cities of the Peninsula, which will be followed by others until October 2024. Today alone, 8 parades are scheduled in Cuneo, Perugia, Enna, Ferrara, Padua, Pavia, Savona and Taranto respectively; while on the 8th the parade will take place in Genoa and Syracuse and the following day in Venice. Rome, however, will be crossed by the rainbow wave on June 15th together with Bergamo, Catania, Forlì and Turin. The next day it will be Verona’s turn. A total of nine Pride events have been called for Saturday 22 June: in Ancora, Cosenza, Frosinone, La Spezia, Lecco, Lodi, Palermo, Varese and Vicenza. Five others are scheduled to meet on the following Saturday, June 29th: Bari, Cagliari, Milan, Naples and Ragusa.
