MESSINA – The national campaign, born in 2011 for the promotion of reading, under the High Patronage of the President of the Republic and with the patronage of the Italian National Commission for UNESCO, invites us to bring books and reading also to contexts other than traditional ones, to intercept those who usually don’t read but who may be intrigued if stimulated in the right way.
“If you read you lib(e)ri” and “The strength of words” are the themes chosen for the 2024 associations, schools and citizens.
The program of the first week
We will begin Monday 6 May10 am in the Salone degli Specchi with the presentation of the book “Raustina” by Cesare Giorgianni, Armando Siciliano Editore.
It is a story of love, but not only, in which the author wanted to insert references to history, literature, art, popular traditions, ancient rites, myths and legends of the Strait, enriched by a hundred rare postcards era and precious historical notes. The narrative, destined to touch the heart and profound sensitivity of the reader, is set in the evocative natural setting of Capo Peloro, the Lakes of Faro and Ganzirri and the villages of Torre Faro and Faro Superiore.
Tuesday 7 May10 am in the Salone degli Specchi, the writer Antonio Bonagura will be the protagonist with his book “Take me away from here”, La Caravella Editrice.
A strong and interesting novel that addresses a current issue: that of adoption, the bureaucratic difficulties connected to it, and the red market. The adoption is told in its long and complex process, but above all it focuses its attention on the barbarism that it hides, thanks to the turnover that concerns it. The style is simple and fluid, the narrative rhythm is fast-paced and engaging and allows you to fully identify with the story of children in danger, who, in the wrong hands, end up being mere goods.
Wednesday 8 May10 am at the “Lucio Barbera” Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art, the event will be dedicated to the book “Madre incompiuta” by Maria Ausilia Boemi, Dialoghi Publisher.
It is a work with an introspective connotation that deals with very delicate topics, such as unwanted motherhood, rape, adoptions and related abandonments. The novel constitutes an opportunity for the author to take stock, according to her sensitivity as a woman and an information professional, on the Italian reality until around the mid-1960s, when the so-called “honor killing” was still permitted ” and when rapes and violence saw women blamed because they were incapable of managing their bodies and, therefore, subtly bewitchers.
The first week of events will close Thursday 9 May, 3.30 pm in the Hall of Mirrors, with the presentation of the book “La Devozione a Maria SS. of the Holy Letter. Principal Patron of the City of Messina” by Marco Grassi, Edas Editori.
The publication, commissioned by the Diocesan Interconfraternal Centre, offers a contribution to deepening and reflecting on the cult of the Madonna of the Letter, which is not a gift just for Messina. Thanks to the strong devotion, especially in past centuries, images of the Madonna della Lettera are found in various parts of Sicily, Italy and also the world, created or brought largely by the people of Messina themselves.
The organization is managed by the VII Directorate “General Services and Economic and Cultural Development Policies” “Culture” Service “G. Library Office”. Pastures”. The meetings will be introduced by the manager Anna Maria Tripodo, by the manager of the “Culture” Service Matteo Venuto and by the manager of the “Giovanni Pascoli” Library and the “Maggio dei Libri” Rosaria Landro.
Book Swap
Finally, for the entire month of May, in the Reading and Consultation Room of the “Giovanni Pascoli” Library, the “Lo Swap Book” initiative will take place which will allow anyone interested to exchange books already read through a barter system.
