The May 7 to Viterbo it will be “bomba-day”: 36 thousand people will be evacuated to allow Army specialists to defuse a World War II bomb. It is a war device belonging to the category of aircraft bombs, precisely the English model MIK IV, which weighs approximately 2000 kg. The bomb was discovered on March 20 during work on a construction site in via Alcide De Gasperi.

Immediately after the discovery, the authorities, led by the prefect Gennaro Capo and the mayor Chiara Frontini, activated the necessary safety procedures, involving the police and the Army to make the device safe. Thanks to the help of the Local Health Authority, the Red Cross and the technical-engineering staff, an evacuation plan was developed to allow defusing operations.

On May 7, sirens will start evacuation operations, and by 9 am the area within a 1400 meter radius of the bomb must be completely cleared. A union order ordered the closure of schools, shops and health facilities in the “red zone”.

To ensure public order and prevent looting, the Police Headquarters has adopted special measures, with the support of drones for aerial monitoring and a ban on parking for vehicles near the bomb. From 6am on 7 May the area will be patrolled by carabinieri, police, finance and civil protection.

The evacuated people will be hosted in reception centers where assistance and catering services will be provided. At the end of the clean-up operations, signaled by a siren, the shuttle buses will take people back to the collection points.
