Two German women, a Spaniard and a Senegalese are the victims of the collapse of a terrace of a club on the beach in Mallorca. Fire brigade teams are looking for victims and survivors, but also for clues to the causes of the collapse in which 16 people were injured. For the authorities, who declared three days of mourning, the excessive weight on the structure is probably to blame.

Palma fire chief Eder Garcia said the floor of the street-level building collapsed onto a basement bar, and that’s where the largest number of victims were found. “The causes are under investigation. The first hypothesis is that perhaps it was due to excessive weight,” he told journalists in Calle de Cartago, facing the bay of Palma.

Seven injured people are in very serious condition and nine are serious, emergency services said. They were taken to several hospitals in Palma de Mallorca.

A firefighter, who described the scene as “a nightmare”, told the newspaper ‘Ultima Hora’ that when he arrived people were crying and screaming around the rubble. The rescuers asked for silence so they could hear the calls for help from those trapped under the rubble.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed his condolences to the families of the victims on X, saying he was “closely following the evolution of the terrible collapse”. The central government is ready to send “all necessary resources” to help regional authorities cope with the situation, he added.
