UDINE – With the car he traveled eight kilometers against traffic and two tunnels on the A23 Alpe Adria motorway. When he was blocked by police officers, the driver, an elderly 88-year-old Italian from the province of Udine, was in a clear state of confusion. For the man, the application of an administrative fine ranging from 2,046 to 8,186 euros, the withdrawal of his driving license and the detention of the vehicle for three months were immediately triggered.
What happened
It was 1.30pm on Friday 12 April, when the switchboard of the Traffic Police Operations Center of Udine received a report of a vehicle proceeding along the southern carriageway of the motorway towards Austria. To the first report, others were added. Security alarms triggered. And the images from the CCTV cameras immortalized the race against traffic in the fast lane. The driver grazed the other vehicles, who managed to dodge him, thus avoiding the tragedy.
A tragedy on the motorway was avoided
Traffic blocked at the state border, the Amaro traffic police patrol awaited the man’s arrival. The crew, after traveling at high speed along the northern carriageway that goes up from Ugovizza, used a by-pass to reverse gear and block the vehicle which was arriving against traffic. Which happened within a few minutes, avoiding any damage. The man immediately appeared in a clear state of confusion. According to what has been reconstructed, most likely after entering the motorway by mistake, the elderly man, finding himself in front of the Ugovizza barrier, reversed his gear and unknowingly headed against traffic until the “Tarvisio” tunnel.
