An important meeting organized by the Carabinieri of the Provincial Command of Naples took place in Portici, aimed at raising awareness among the elderly on the topic of scams. The event, held in the premises of the Church of Salute Parish, saw the participation of around thirty people, all between 65 and 75 years old.
The meeting, enriched by the collaboration of the parish priest Don Francesco Rinaldo and the dean Don Giorgio Pisano, allowed the participants to acquire valuable information on how to protect themselves from increasingly sophisticated scams that target the elderly. Major Francesca Ruberto, commander of the Carabinieri Company of Torre del Greco, and Lieutenant Francesco Russo, commander of the Carabinieri Station of Portici, were the main speakers.
During the event, Major Ruberto underlined the importance of awareness and quick reaction when faced with suspicious situations. “Prevention is key in the fight against scams,” said the Officer, “And we’re here to provide seniors with the tools they need to protect themselves.”
The discussion focused on the most common tricks used by scammers, such as those of the fake policeman or the fake lawyer. The participants, also encouraged by the deputy parish priest Ferdinando Silvestri, shared personal experiences and asked questions on how to defend themselves from strangers and recognize a real policeman from a fake one.
Major Ruberto closed the meeting by reiterating the Carabinieri’s commitment to being on the citizens’ side and protecting them from these dangers. He also recalled some fundamental advice: always be wary of strangers, never provide personal information to strangers, always verify the identity of the interlocutors, and report any scams to the competent authorities.
