Olbia. On the occasion of May Day, Labor Day, Danilo DeianaGeneral Secretary of CGIL Gallura, expressed a series of reflections regarding the situation of work and social justice.

Deiana underlined that May Day is dedicated to peace, to justice social and decent work. It highlighted the growing precariousness of work in Sardinia, with the prevalence of precarious contracts and widespread involuntary part-time work, placing the region in second place for the percentage of employed people who are unable to find full-time work.

The CGIL has launched a challenge, called “let’s free work”, which includes four referendums to overcome the Jobs Act and guarantee more safety in subcontracting. Deiana underlined the importance of collecting signatures for these referendums, which aim to erase the rules on unfair dismissals, regulate fixed-term contracts and promote safer work.

These are the words of the secretary: “our May 1st is dedicated to peace because there are too many theaters of war around us, to social justice because only by promoting gender equality and rights of everyone, including migrants, we can stop the barbarization of society and of course at work since it is Labor Day, a job that is still too often precarious, poorly paid and insecure. The analyzes on the quality of the demand for work by companies, as shown by the INPS data on new hires in 2023, confirm the prevalence of precarious or fixed-term employment relationships. Furthermore, the indicator relating to involuntary part-time is significant. The BES report places Sardinia in second place, after Sicily, for the percentage of employed people who are unable to find full-time work. This year we at the CGIL want to celebrate May 1st by continuing the challenge launched on April 25th “let’s free work”, that of the referendums: four questions to overcome the Jobs Act and guarantee greater safety in subcontracting. Wherever possible, the union will collect signatures for the four questions against precariousness, easy dismissals, the jungle of contracts and subcontracts. Among the main points of our campaign is the cancellation of the rules on illegitimate dismissals, the regulation of fixed-term contracts and safer work if it is true as it is true that in Gallura in 2023 there were 44 injuries at work, and in the first two months of 2024, 9 accidents have already occurred, including one fatal and two serious ones resulting in permanent disability. A truly sad and unacceptable record, to which we cannot and must not resign ourselves.”

It is Deiana himself who closes his speech with an invitation to the central government: “the measures announced by the government in the decree of 1 May do not seem capable of determining positive developments: the one-off payment on thirteenth wages will only be valid for 2025 and the expected reduction of contributions for the new ones hiring has already shown that it does not have a significant impact on employment increases. The government, in compliance with Article 1 of the Constitution, has the political and moral obligation to put full and good employment at the center of its agenda.”
