Yesterday prosecutors Massimiliano Siddi and Chiara Capezzuto asked for immediate judgment for the mayor Chiara Frontini and her husband Fabio Cavini. The charge is of conspiracy to threaten a political body based on article 338 of the penal code. All following the complaint by councilor Marco Bruzziches for the phrases that Cavini allegedly said on 26 September last year during a dinner at his house. A request, that of the prosecutors, which is based on the evidence collected during the investigations.

In your opinion, should the mayor resign?
“The most obvious thing to do is to reiterate the motion of no confidence, motivated differently from the previous one. Then you have to go to council to discuss what happened. Because the city needs to know what’s happening. Then a politician must assume his responsibilities, that is, resign or continue with the council. The request for immediate trial for the prosecutors is based on clear evidence. So the situation risks being more serious than we know. Not only that, but it must also be considered that the mayor of a city is the legal representative of the entity and this is not a trivial factor, because he is the person who guarantees the city. And the council must say whether the mayor is still the guarantor of Viterbo.”
From your point of view, in light of the latest events, should the council go ahead?
“The previous motion of no confidence was linked to Frontini’s political program. He could not concentrate on an ongoing investigation. Now that this is over we can freely discuss what happened in the council. And each councilor, in their own conscience, will be able to vote or not to vote no confidence in the mayor. All based on political, not judicial reasoning.”
Threat to a political body. An accusation that calls into question the city council. Should Frontini have to go to trial, in your opinion, should the council become a civil party during the trial?
“Certainly, if Frontini goes to trial, the council must become a civil party during the trial. A choice that must be voted on by the chamber. But at this point it would be better to vote of no confidence. The phase we are experiencing is very delicate and in my political experience I have never seen one like it. Not even during the first Republic. A phase that is unpredictable. And to simplify everything it would be better for the mayor to resign.”

How does the image of Viterbo emerge from this whole affair?
“It’s an embarrassing situation. There has never been such a serious and amateurish thing. In short, said in jargon, ‘a scam like this’ has never happened to me. In politics there are rules, and the rules must be respected. And what happens will be even more serious, because the longer this situation goes on, the more all the details will come out. With strong media action, not only at local level. So the image we are giving is an improper image of the city.”
