Saturday 20 April 2024 at 9.00 pm a new appointment at “Underground Naples” of vico Sant’Anna di Palazzo, 52 near Piazza del Plebiscito, with the Jazz neighborhoods in concert with their “Neapolitan Gipsy Jazz”. In addition to their own albums, the Neapolitan band will also play some tributes to their inspirer and master Pino Daniele.
An extraordinary concert in the underground of Naples
To accompany the evening between past and present in the meanders of the earth and in the depths of one’s emotions, will be the sound of Mario Romano with his manouche guitar which will be validly supported by Gianluca Capurro on classical guitar.
Saturday night will be one of the most evocative concerts of the band both for the location and for the repertoire, since they will play songs taken from their previous albums: the first released in January 2013 “And roads lead to the sea”, a phrase taken from one of the songs by Pino Daniele, master and inspirer of the project and to whom the final part of the concert will be dedicated. The second one “The 4 days of Naples” (September 2016) inspired by the Neapolitan revolt of ’43, to arrive at the latest work “The Parallel City” (March 2023) which tells in music the thousand facets and contradictions of Naples.
The very particular location of “Underground Naples” near Piazza del Plebiscito
The term “Underground Naples” indicates the very dense and complex network of tunnels and cavities, which are found underground and which they form a true parallel city which reflects, in a negative way, the surface city. It extends under the entire historic centermyths and legends still alive today in the collective imagination of Neapolitans are linked to it. The galleries underneath Naples, have been used over the centuries in various ways. Born following the extraction of tuff for the construction of the city, they are they were then used as an aqueduct and as a refuge at the time of the Second World War. The descent to underground Naples it is a one-of-a-kind experience and certainly unrepeatable.
It is a “2400 year time journey” which starts from one of the alleys of the old city, precisely from Vico S. Anna di Palazzo. A parallel between the Naples of the subsoil and that of the surface, starting from the first transformations of the morphology of the territory, which occurred by the Greeks starting from 470 BC up to our times. For this extraordinary occasion, all this and much more will be told by the historic president of “La Napoli Sotterranea” Salvatore Quaranta, who with great commitment has brought one of the most important and visited sites in the city back to life.
The formula of the evening
The evening includes the opening of the gates at 8.30 pm for those who wish to arrive early for ticketing and then descent into Underground Naples guided by the historic voice of Salvatore Quaranta, president of the association “LAES – Libera Associazione Escursionisti Sottosuolo” who before the concert, in the bowels of Naples, will tell stories experienced firsthand during the Second World War to today. Afterwards the Quartieri Jazz concert comfortably seated in a large underground quarry.
