Pierpaolo Bisoli’s men will try to reverse the trend tomorrow at 6pm at the Mapei Stadium…

How many times since the introduction of the single group has Modena won at Reggiana? Just one. It was October 15, 1950, the sixth day of the 1950-51 Serie B championship. The data was reported by Quotidiano Sportivo on the eve of Reggiana-Modena on Wednesday 1 May.

The story of that historic Secchia derby

In front of almost 12 thousand spectators, Reggiana, first in the standings, took the lead in the 10th minute with center forward Scagliarini.

An advantage that lasted only three minutes because the referee Guido Agnolin, father of Luigi, an international match director, decreed a penalty which the Hungarian left inside Gyula Toth converted, putting an end to the unbeaten run of the Granata goalkeeper Manfredini after 463 minutes.

The match was balanced, the vigor and enthusiasm of Reggiana was matched by the class and freshness of Modena, who alongside a couple of veterans such as Renato Braglia and Renato Brighenti fielded several young players of the future such as the goalkeeper Giorgio Ghezzi, the full-back Giuseppe Corradi, the midfielder Enzo Menegotti and the striker Sergio Brighenti, all of whom went on to wear the blue shirt of the national team like the more experienced midfielder Maino Neri.

It was the eldest of the Brighenti brothers, Renato known as ‘Ghega’, who scored the Giallorossi’s lead in the 72nd minute, which was then confidently defended by the spectacular saves of Ghezzi, Inter’s future ‘kamikaze’ and European champion with Milan.

That promising Modena, coached by the Hungarian Imre Senkey, finished third, preceded by Spal and Legnano who rose to Serie A.

In the 28 derbies ‘of Secchia’ or ‘del Lambrusco’, 17 of B, 10 of C and one of D, in addition to that one success the yellow-blue team also achieved 13 draws, while Reggiana’s victories were 14, without take into account that of 2017-18, with Modena beaten 1-0 but then removed and bankrupt.

The goals, 15 for the canaries and 38 for the granata. The first and last derbies played ended in a draw.
