Carabiniere Daniele Breganze, who died yesterday at just 23 years of age in a collision between his car and a lorry along the A 20 Palermo-Messina motorway, in the stretch between Brolo and Rocca di Capri Leone, in the direction of the regional capital. The soldier served at the Carabinieri Company of Serra San Bruno, in the province of Vibo Valentia. According to the first information gathered, he was on four-year terms, having joined the force in 2022 and was already destined for transfer to the XII “Sicilia” Battalion in Palermo. In his car were several pieces of luggage and personal effects that the young soldier of the Army was transporting to his hometown.
Pain among colleagues, who learned of the accident while they were at work. Today there is an air of sadness and no one wants to talk in the barracks.
The young policeman was alone at the wheel of his car, a Nissan Juke, when, for reasons still under investigation, he collided with an articulated lorry in front of him at the entrance to the “Cipolla” tunnel, in the Brolo area. The accident occurred around 3pm on a stretch of motorway where there are works, resulting in narrowing of the road. For the young man the impact was fatal. However, the driver of the heavy vehicle was unharmed, as he heard the very loud roar behind him and, having got out of the articulated lorry, noticed the tragedy. In an understandable state of shock he was transferred, only for the necessary checks, to the Sant’Agata Militello hospital.
The scene presented to the first responders was terrible with the body of the unfortunate policeman extracted from the twisted sheets of the vehicle. On site were the Traffic Police of the Santagata detachment, the firefighters, the 118 ambulances, the motorway emergency response vehicles and the CAS (Sicilian Motorway Consortium) and a patrol of the Carabinieri from the Radiomobile Unit of the Patti Company. The public prosecutor on duty, the deputy public prosecutor of Patti Giovanna Lombardo, after the medical-legal assessment and the completion of the findings which lasted until the evening, authorized the removal of the body, taken into custody for the autopsy examination in the next days at the Papardo hospital in Messina. Professor Daniela Sapienza will be appointed for the exam. The motorway transit between the Brolo and Rocca di Capri Leone junctions towards Palermo remained closed until the evening, with a long queue of cars which, in the meantime, had lined up. The queue was cleared away, under the surveillance of the Polstrada, from the nearby Brolo toll booth.
Yesterday was a painful afternoon, which unfortunately follows the tragic epilogue of last Saturday 20 April when, just a few tens of kilometers further on, at the height of the Rosmarino viaduct, in the Torrenova area, another fatal accident occurred on the A 20. Another Palermo resident lost his life on that occasion, the 66-year-old lorry driver Giuseppe Serio, from the San Filippo Neri (Zen) neighbourhood, who crashed without hitting other vehicles below the viaduct after an impact at the exit of the gallery.
