The photographer Giuseppe Leone has died
The photographer from Ragusa was mainly known for his authorial photographs, many of which were a tool for describing the beauties of the Sicily, from landscapes to costumes. During his honored career, Maestro Leone has published more than 50 volumes of photos with various publishers (including Sellerio and Bompiani) and has also been the protagonist of numerous art exhibitions in Italy and abroad.
Citizen mourning in Ragusa
On the occasion of Giuseppe Leone’s funeral, in Ragusa – his land, much loved and protagonist of priceless shots – there will be citizen mourning.
The condolence
Many messages of condolence for the passing of Giuseppe Leone. One of these comes directly from the mayor of Ragusa, Peppe Cassì, who writes on social media: “On this sad day, Ragusa loses one of its highest artistic exponents. Peppino Leone was not just a Sicilian photographer but the Sicily in photography. His extraordinary literary friendships, his commitment to describing the places and humanity of the Iblei, to enhance excellences such as the Prefecture Palace and at the same time our most intimate traditions. For years his studio was a light always on and always alive in our historic center; and just yesterday we inaugurated a room of the new City Museum at Palazzo Zacco with 30 of his photographs of Ragusa. We will proclaim the citizen mourning; I will provide you with all the details as soon as possible.”

The politician Fabrizio Ilardo adds: “I express my personal condolences, also on behalf of the entire municipal council represented by me as president, for the passing of the great maestro Giuseppe Leone. A artist who gave so much to our city, a character of very notable caliber, as among other things his acquaintances have testified (Sciascia, Consolo, Bufalino, just to mention a few names). From today Ragusa loses an exceptional point of reference. The mayor will proclaim city mourning.”
