Vinitaly, the prestigious wine sector event which closes its doors tomorrow in Verona, has seen considerable attention paid to Apulian wines. The region, famous for its reds, proves to be an inexhaustible source of excellence also in the white segment, arousing the interest of international consumers.

“It is crucial to underline the importance of white wines”, say Luca Lazzàro, president of Confagricoltura Puglia and Alessandro Candido, president of the regional wine federation, directly from Vinitaly. “These varieties, often characterized by a lower alcohol content than reds, are gaining more and more admirers globally”

“White wines are appreciated for their lightness and freshness, making them perfect for daily consumption and ideal for accompanying light meals or to be enjoyed alone. Consumer preferences, which are constantly evolving, highlight a growing demand for less alcoholic and more refreshing wines, a demand that white wines fully satisfy.”

“Their versatility – they conclude – makes them an ideal choice for a wide range of dishes, from Mediterranean cuisine to seafood, a factor that makes them attractive to both restaurateurs and consumers. In response to these market trends, wine producers may consider producing white wines with a lower alcohol content, thus opening up new market opportunities. Clear and informative labeling on alcohol levels can also help consumers make informed choices.”

With a total value of 395 million euros, the region’s wine production plays an economically significant role, contributing significantly to regional exports. Despite the obstacles, Apulian wineries have demonstrated their ability to conquer international markets, exporting wine around the world for around 210 million euros.

Puglia has stood out as one of the Italian regions with a constant production in the last 5 years, with an average of 13 million quintals of wine grapes, representing 11% of the national value and positioning itself as the second producing region in Italy , after Veneto. Globally, Italy is the leading wine producer, contributing approximately 18.5% of global production.
