The race of Jasmine Paolini in the prestigious tournament WTA 1000 in Madrid it ended in the round of 16 at the hands of the promising young Russian Mirra Andreeva. The Italian tennis player, currently number 13 in the world ranking, was defeated in two sets with a score of 7-6(2) 6-4 after an intense battle that lasted an hour and 40 minutes.
Paolini had the opportunity to close the first set when she was leading 5-2, but she failed to take advantage of the chance, allowing Andreeva to get back into the set and win the tie-break. In the second set, the Italian attempted a courageous comeback after finding herself 4-0 down, but once again her opponent’s determination and solidity made the difference.
Mirra Andreeva, who celebrates her 17th birthday today, has demonstrated surprising tennis maturity for her young age. The Russian born in 2007 was able to manage the key moments of the match with great coolness, achieving a deserved victory which propels her to the quarter-finals of the Madrid tournament.
Despite the disappointment of the elimination, Jasmine Paolini can be satisfied with her progress in the Madrid tournament, where she once again demonstrated that she can compete at a high level. Now the Italian will look to the next events of the clay season.
The match was characterized by a difficult start on serve for both players, with frequent exchanges of breaks in the first games. Paolini seemed to have found the right rhythm when she took a 5-2 lead, but Andreeva did well to cancel a set point and get back into the set, then closing the tie-break with authority.
In the second set, Paolini suffered an empty pass which saw her fall 4-0 down. Despite a generous comeback attempt, the Italian was unable to complete the run-up, giving up serve in the last game and handing the victory to her young opponent by committing a double fault in the first point and a free forehand error on match point.
