She had stopped breast cancer treatment to give birth to the baby she was carrying, but she didn’t make it. She is Azzurra Carnelos died at the age of 33the young mother from Oderzo, in the province of Treviso, who had interrupted chemo to complete her pregnancy, despite the discovery that the cancer she thought she had defeated had returned.
The story of the mother who died in Treviso to save her son
The 33-year-old had discovered the breast cancer in 2019, after her grandmother who died from the same disease appeared to her in a dream while she lived in Milan. The girl had interpreted that vision as a warning sign and she underwent checks, from which a lump in her breast emerged.
Azzurra had undergone chemotherapy prescribed by the doctors, who thought that, after the cycle of treatments, the girl had managed to defeat the neoplasm.

The return of the tumor
The woman was therefore able to start her life again and after getting married in 2022, in February 2023 she discovered that she had remained pregnant.
In July of the same year, during checks on the fetus, doctors diagnosed her with return of the tumor in an even more aggressive form and suddenly the joy of becoming a mother had given way to the difficult choice of having to decide whether to continue chemotherapy or see the pregnancy through to the end.
Stopping chemo
Azzurra had decided to stop cancer treatment to prevent them from compromising the health of the child and at the 32nd week the staff of the Neonatology department of the Ca’ Foncello hospital in Treviso had decided to deliver the baby, so as to allow the mother to resume therapy. 8 months after giving birth, despite her having restarted treatment, the 33-year-old died on Saturday 13 April.

“Azzurra was strong, kind, courageous and always smiling until the end, enjoying every moment at the side of her son, who is now 8 months old” friends and relatives told the Corriere della Sera.
The Avezzano precedent
The story of Azzurra Carnelos brings to mind the same choice made in March 2023 by a mother from Avezzano, to give up chemo to give birth to her child.
Even in that case the woman, a 44-year-old mother of three residing in the province of L’Aquila, had treatment for cancer was suspendedbut six months after giving birth she died.
