Descriptive text here

The Via Lucana of the Cammino Materano and the Cammino della Madonna Nera are involved in the largest national event dedicated to the paths.

This is a joint promotion project of all Italian regions in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Enit. 42 paths involved throughout Italy, two for each region.

Among the partners CAI Club Alpino Italiano and FISH “Discover the Italy you didn’t know – Viaggio Italiano” is a joint tourism promotion project of the Italian Regions which is part of the 2022 National Promotion Plan of the Ministry of Tourism.

Among the activities carried out now, there is one aimed at valorising slow tourism, an increasingly popular travel method that allows you to fully enjoy even lesser-known corners of our Peninsula, perhaps in spring. It is “Cammini Aperti” which, created by the Umbria Region – as a leader for slow tourism – aims to be the most important national event dedicated to paths/itineraries, promoting the values of accessibility.

It will be held on 13 and 14 April, 42 paths involved, 2 for each region and autonomous province, with over 2000 participants, after registering on the dedicated portal. The excursions/walks will be led by environmental hiking guides or medium mountain companions.

Among the characteristics of each route: being a ring and having a length between 6 and 10 km. Also involved in “Cammini Aperti” are two important partners, the CAI – Italian Alpine Club and FISH – Italian Federation for Overcoming Handicap. The CAI, a public body supervised by the Ministry of Tourism, worked by selecting 21 paths, one for each region, and identified a stretch of these – of variable length – on which to carry people with mobility difficulties through the use of joilettes and/or wheelchairs .

Furthermore, he will provide information on all 42 paths, distributing a handbook, to encourage responsible outdoor practice. FISH, however, will actively work to ensure the accessibility of these routes, working to ensure that people with disabilities can fully participate in the excursions.

Through awareness-raising initiatives and collaborations with local authorities and regional federations, a slow tourism system that is accessible and inclusive for all, including those with reduced mobility, will be promoted. In this regard, a document will be drawn up with guidelines for all third sector entities and regions for the most realistic use possible.

In Basilicata “Cammini Aperti” will be held on the Via Lucana of the Cammino Materano and on the Cammino della Madonna Nera” Via Lucana of the Cammino Materano and has seen the support of Apt Basilicata.

April 13

The first of the two days of “Cammini Aperti” will take participants to discover one of the most evocative stretches of the Via Lucana.

The complete itinerary connects two UNESCO sites, the city of Paestum with Matera. We will travel a fragment of the Via Lucana with an 8 km excursion, from Miglionico, one of the “Most Beautiful Villages in Italy”, to the edge of the Manferrara forest.

Even before you find yourself walking, what catches your eye is the beauty of the town, its privileged position which dominates from above and the Malconsiglio Castle, where the “Conspiracy of the Barons” against King Ferdinand I of Aragon was held. From here you start, go down the Via Appia and see the panorama dictated by Lake San Giuliano, one of the most important water basins in the region and a WWF Oasis, and the Basento River. The natural context is truly fascinating. You will come across the Porticella Church and cross the Manferrara forest, which extends for 400 hectares. The return to the starting point will take place with a free shuttle.

Walk of the Black Madonna – 14 April

The excursion designed for Sunday is the last stretch and the fourth stage of the Camino della Madonna Nera which goes from Piana Bonocore to the Sanctuary of Viggiano.

It is one of the most fascinating areas in all of Basilicata: you are in the evocative National Park of the Lucanian Apennines Val d’Agri and the air is impregnated with spirituality. The meeting point is at 1,400 metres, on the slopes of the Montagna Grande di Viggiano, to then climb along the historic paved path and take the path that halfway up the slope leads to the other side of the mountain until reaching the Sanctuary of the Black Madonna.

The choice to travel these places is to admire breathtaking views and experience a complete immersion in nature aimed at the adoration of one of the Pilgrim Madonnas of Southern Italy which boasts an intense popular cult that has persisted for centuries.

Please remember that “Discover the Italy you didn’t know” is a common promotion strategy of the Italian Regions resulting from a program agreement between the Ministry of Tourism and the Tourism Policy Commission – coordinated by the Abruzzo Region – of the Conference of the Regions and of the autonomous provinces, in collaboration with ENIT.

A project which sees the involvement as leader of the Emilia-Romagna, Umbria, Marche and Abruzzo Regions, each for the valorisation of a specific theme (villages, slow tourism, active tourism, nature and parks) with the latter also responsible for the aspects related to interoperability with the Tourism Digital Hub.

These were joined by the partner Regions who were entrusted with some vertical themes. The Regions of Tuscany, Friuli-Venezia Giulia and Campania thus respectively deal with food and wine, golf and underwater archaeological tourism routes and itineraries, all to further emphasize the project and thus also the Italian product.
