Shelves full of volumes, books and markers on the tables, drawings on the walls, puzzles to study art with, models of the human body for science. It is easy to recognize in these environments spaces dedicated to teaching: here, however, the teachers wear a white coat and the students are the young patients of the Department of Pediatrics of theAorn San Pio of Benevento.
The School in Hospital service is the result of an inter-institutional agreement stipulated in 1999, which provides for the presence of qualified personnel, who guarantees a specific training offer according to needs. The School in Hospital service – we read in the note – is a jewel in the crown of the San Pio Hospital and the strategic management is trying to invest and grow this service even further.
Here is the data relating to the pupils followed in the 2022/2023 school year.
In this school year, 239 pupils were followed, of which 97 were from nursery school, equal to approximately 41%, 90 from primary school, equal to approximately 39%, and 52 from lower secondary school, equal to approximately 20%. The students followed were almost entirely of Italian nationality, only a minimal percentage of them, around 3%, came from North African countries.
“The school in the hospital – says the general director Maria Morgante – allows hospitalized students to be able to continue their studies, encouraging the development of skills and recognizing their right and duty to education, facilitating reintegration into the contexts they belong to, and thus preventing any situations of school dropout and abandonment.
We must guarantee all children in hospital not only the right to health but also the right to education”, concludes Morgante.
