Abruzzo, the reclamation tour in Bussi sul Tirino

In Bussi sul Tirino, in Abruzzo, the third stage of the Gran Tour Bonifiche. A journey through the large construction sites present in various Italian regions, around which Confindustria Cisambiente brings together institutions and operators in the sector. The objective is to encourage the exchange of skills, good practices and collaboration between all the subjects involved in the process. A traveling project developed and coordinated by the general director of Confindustria Cisambiente Lucia Leonessibased on an idea of the vice president of the Confindustria Cisambiente Reclamation Area, Gianfranco Cergol.

The interventions in all the areas touched by the Grand Tour are managed by companies associated with Confindustria Cisambiente.

The stop in Abruzzo involves Greenthesis, among the partners of the Tre Monti company, established on the initiative of Edison in 2021, which is conducting operations in the Tremonti area of the SIN of Bussi sul Tirino (province of Pescara).

In the Tremonti area, the reclamation interventions consist of the excavation and disposal of waste for the entire site (approximately 30 thousand m2) and a thermal desorption intervention in the northern portion, prior to waste removal.

Thermal desorption is a technology that allows the treatment of contaminants present in depth, without moving the soil. Using thermal probes inserted deeply, the soil is heated up to temperatures of 100° C, causing the vaporisation of the volatile and semi-volatile substances present, which are captured and conveyed into treatment plants.

To test the effectiveness of the thermal desorption treatment on the site, a pilot module was created on the area that had the maximum concentration of contaminants (extending 400 m2), present above all in correspondence with the peaty and clayey levels located between the 9 and 14 meters deep, for a total volume of contaminated soil of 1,200 m3. Given the positive results of the pilot test, the company is planning to extend the intervention to the entire northern area of the site (5,200 m2). While in the southern portion, the removal of contaminated land was 70% achieved.

“The Tre Monti company – declares the managing director Damiano Belli – represents a paradigmatic model for the management and positive resolution of cases of historical contamination. Tre Monti was established by Edison in 2021, bringing together the skills of three leading operators in environmental services: Greenthesis, ACR Reggiani (Hera Group), Edison Next Environment and of which Edison is a shareholder”.

“The Grand Tour reflects our sensitivity to the topic of land reclamation, which is destined to take on an increasingly important role – he declares Lucia Leonessi, general director and founder of Confindustria Cisambiente – I believe in this type of intervention, since the establishment of Confindustria Cisambiente the Reclamation Area has been present. The value of this project is that it gives centrality to the regeneration works of the territories, which can thus be experienced again. Our association collects requests on site and creates a link between the various subjects: local authorities, administrations and businesses. The relationship between public and private must be strengthened to continue on the path of great works for the community – concludes Leonessi.

The Gran Tour Bonifiche, which last summer reached the former petrochemical plant in Mantua and the Micorosa area in the SIN of Brindisi, will continue after the Bussi stage with new appointments in other Italian reclamation centers.
