The ex-Ila Park is suffering

Work continues on the structures within the park, but the tree heritage is suffering

Legnano – The works of historic solarium structures inside the Ex-Ila park they continue and only a small part of the green area can be visited. This oasis of nature within the urban context of Legnano is the subject of the existing collaboration between the Municipality andRegis associationwhich protects and enhances the historic gardens in Italy. The signature between the two entities was recently renewed following some changes that were made to the association’s statute.

Within the area there are also some historic premises, now used by some local associations and entities, such as Anffas. In one of these, there is also a small one chapel, recently whitewashed. It is a small historical pearl, embellished with a large window that impresses those present.

The ex-Ila Park, in a state of “mediocre conservation”

Former Ila Legnano park (4)The ex-Ila Park is part of “Elena di Savoia” sanatorium complex, which was inaugurated in 1924 in the presence of the queen herself. The entire complex was commissioned by Carlo Jucker as an attempt to stem the plague of tuberculosis. In this context, the Park was considered an essential element for the treatment of the disease. (read here when the Sanatorium was built on the plain)

Most of the arboreal heritage it dates back to the time of the construction of the complex; – we read on the Regis website – However, an in-depth census of the existing arboreal heritage has never been carried out but only a topographical survey of the trees with recognition of the species they belong to“. Among the native species of the place could be found lime trees, beeches, plane trees and maples.

The widespread use of alien species in the last century is unfortunately showing suffering and around forty specimens of spruce trees at the back of the building were cut down in 2004 following a violent storm“, Regis’s description continues. Among the tree species there is also a cedar of Lebanon. “The park is in a mediocre state of conservation as a large part of the tree heritage has been lost and of the remaining specimens numerous specimens are in a state of distress“, explains the Regis website.
