CARRARA – The consolidation and restoration works on the balcony in Piazza Gramsci began a few days ago. The intervention will include, in addition to the recovery and definitive safety of the balcony located along Via Eugenio Chiesa, also the complete cleaning of all the marble surfaces of the central balustrade, those of the two lateral ramps and the ashlar overlooking the square. . The project was drawn up by architect Valentina Musetti and will be divided into two phases. The first will involve dismantling the parapet of the central balustrade to allow technicians to check the state of conservation of the columns, remove residual mortar and perfectly clean the contact faces. After this extraordinary cleaning work, the fractured columns will be subjected to a consolidation operation and then, like all the others, they will be relocated respecting the original joints. The second phase of the intervention will instead involve cleaning all the marble surfaces of the central balustrade, the balustrade of the side ramps and the ashlar facing.

“This is a long-awaited intervention that will allow us to completely recover one of the most beautiful places in the center – explains the councilor for public works -. Given the historical and architectural value of Piazza Gramsci, designed and built at the end of the 19th century by the engineer Leandro Caselli, before intervening we had to wait for a long authorization phase which primarily involved the Superintendence of Fine Arts. Once we had received the green light to proceed we were able to entrust the work not only to recover the balustrade, damaged following a road accident, but also to restore decorum to the central staircase and all the ashlar work overlooking the square. At the same time we have also already started the procedure, which also in this case involves the Superintendency, for a restoration of the central fountain designed by Kenneth Davis and to bring water back to that of the Elephant”.
