This morning, 9 May 2024, the naming ceremony of the Guardia di Finanza barracks in Busto, headquarters of the Busto Arsizio Group, took place.

The property, located in via Palestro n. 2, known as Villa Pozzi, was named in memory of the officer Giulio Massarelli, decorated with the Righteous Among the Nations Medal, originally from Terni (TR), for having personally contributed, in multiple circumstances, during the period of Nazi occupation of Northern Italy, to the rescue of numerous Jews, accompanying them to the border with Switzerland and, putting their own lives in grave danger, helping them to leave the country until the liberation of Italy.

The ceremony began with the rendering of honors to the Interregional Commander of North Western Italy of the Guardia di Finanza, Army Corps General Fabrizio Carrarini, who took his place among the numerous political, civil, religious and military authorities and the guests intervened.

Representatives of the highest institutional positions in the Province of Varese participated in the naming of the barracks.

The flag-raising ritual and the anthem

After the speeches of the Provincial Commander of Varese, Brigadier General Crescenzo Sciaraffa and the Interregional Commander of North Western Italy of the Guardia di Finanza, Army Corps General Fabrizio Carrarini, the evocative ritual of the Flag Raising took place, to the tune of the ‘National anthem. For the occasion, the Mayor, Dr. Emanuele Antonelli, donated the Tricolor to the barracks, personally delivering it into the hands of the Interregional Commander of North Western Italy.

After the flag raising ceremony, the plaque naming the barracks was uncovered by the godmother of the ceremony, Mrs. Monica Massarelli, niece of the decorated soldier, and subsequently the plaque was blessed by HE Monsignor Severino Carlo Pagani , Provost of Busto Arsizio, and the reading of the Financier’s Prayer by the Military Chaplain, Don Simone Salvadore.

The delivery of a gift

For the occasion, Mr Massimo Massarelli, nephew of the decorated soldier, gave the Interregional Commander of North Western Italy a gift he himself had made, as a symbol of gratitude, affection and closeness to all the Fiamme Gialle of Italy, which will be exhibited at the Busto Arsizio Group.

A group of students from the Alessandro Manzoni primary school in Busto Arsizio also participated in the ceremony and wanted to deliver a collection of drawings on the Guardia di Finanza to the Interregional Commander of North Western Italy.

The ceremony concluded with the traditional toast.
