We all hope that Cremonese can reach Serie A and yet, beyond football, Cremona can already boast at least one record of absolute excellence: cancer mortality. In fact, official data shows that we die from cancer much more than in the rest of Italy and this is certainly the main reason to be proud of living (and dying) in our beautiful city. In fact, official data shows that in our country more people die from stomach cancer (even if Piacenza is worse off), from colon cancer, from lung cancer, from pancreatic cancer, from breast cancer and, although the cleanliness of sidewalks and streets remain an important topic, as well as manholes overflowing with water and poorly maintained pedestrian crossings, it is strange that almost none of the candidates for the position of mayor seem to deal with other problems, other than the appointment of the Board of Directors of Padania Acque. This is certainly an important topic, but the absolute silence on the state of health of citizens and on the reasons that determine the high mortality from cancer is evidently an element not to be taken into consideration, in fact making explicit a disturbing superficiality in dealing with the real problems of citizens. Maybe it’s not true that when there is health there is everything, but if there is no health everything becomes nothing.
We therefore take the liberty of asking our candidates for the office of mayor what their thoughts are regarding the serious risks linked to the pollution of the air and water of our territories, elements of primary importance for the development of tumors and therefore of our life (and death). Certainly in this field individual “lifestyles” and “health promotion” are also important and yet it is widely demonstrated that the main cause of cancer mortality is living in a polluted environment.
However, let’s not be told that it will be the new hospital that will solve all our problems: it’s not true and in any case it won’t be able to help us avoid getting sick.
So what are the electoral programs that take into account our dramatic and sad reality relating to air, water and soil pollution? Not to be environmentalists, but to know what our destiny will be.
It is never good to die, but dying from a tumor that could have been avoided is even worse.
