It’s quite impressive to see Vanja Milinkovic-Savic on the bench, whether with Toro or Serbia. Last year, in fact, he didn’t miss even a minute between club and country, even reaching 42 matches between the championship, Italian cup and qualification for the European Championships. Now, however, the goalkeeper has returned to base with two benches in a row during the national team break: coach Stojkovic did not use him in the friendlies against Russia and Cyprus, preferring first Petrovic and then Rajkovic. It doesn’t seem like a failure at all, on the contrary it looks more like a move to understand who can be Vanja’s vice-president at the European Championship. In the meantime, however, the goalkeeper has returned to Philadelphia and now has another goal to conquer with his Toro.
His dream, in fact, is to join the elite of the great Granata goalkeepers of the caliber of Terraneo, Castellini and Marchegiani, while during the Cairo era the strongest was undoubtedly Sirigu, if only for the numbers. And those, nine days before the end of the championship, prove him absolutely right: in Udine, in fact, the 14th match without conceding a goal arrived, the second best result ever in the management of the Alessandria publisher. In first place, in fact, is Sirigu, who finished with 15 in the 2018/2019 season with Mazzarri. The best of all time remains Terraneo with 18 in 1979/1980, Castellini completes the podium with 17 in the year played with the scudetto on his chest and Marchegiani with the same number of matches but with Serie A with 18 teams, therefore with four fewer total games. Vanja thus aims to continue climbing the rankings, also because in this way there would be some more hope of achieving the Europe objective.
