Yesterday some professionals, also belonging to the Rotary Club of Sanremo, held a conversation with the students of the ‘GD Cassini’ high school in Sanremo, with the aim of helping fifth year students in choosing their future university faculty.
The Rotary Club is an international organization, comprising 1 million and 400 thousand people, which promotes Service activities, i.e. offering various possibilities such as training, access to care and targeted funding for many other activities.
Today the high school welcomed a group of experts, such as Doctor Pietro Martullo, agent of the Stat armed police force, Engineer Franco Formaggini, Doctor Gianluca Lisa, doctor and psychiatrist, the Lawyer. Enrico pitali, Dr. Luigi Fracas, manager in various multinationals (including Pfizer), in particular responsible for relations with personnel, Engineer Claudio Lacanina, Pirelli engineer and manager, animated by a strong interest in the East, Alberto Guasco, Journalist, Dr. Claudia Cattarini Mastelli, teacher and entrepreneur and Claudio Sparago, insurer.
It was a very educational experience, above all thanks to the wide participation of expert professionals in such diverse fields. Emphasis was placed on the importance of psychiatry in a present increasingly undermined by the incidence of mental illnesses, on the importance of reflecting on oneself to decide which profession to undertake (to be a manager, in addition to professionalism, i.e. the baggage of previously acquired knowledge and skills, it is necessary to know how to work in a group, individually managing responsibilities and loads of stress), on the skills necessary for the various professions (to be a lawyer, the mastery of λόγος, ἦθος, πάθος is very important). The speakers adequately dealt with current issues, such as examination of the hierarchy of the armed forces, the relationship between police commissioner and prefect (“police: government = army: homeland”), the importance of citizens’ approval for the actions of the authority public and the role that AI will have in the labor market in the near future.
What struck the students most was the constant and recurring appeal to one’s own θυμός: one must listen to one’s heart, feel what passions animate us, and be happy with what one chooses. In addition to this, the children strongly appreciated another important lesson imparted by the speakers: in life there are many opportunities, there is always the possibility of reinventing oneself and being able to give the best of oneself, arriving at γνῶθισεαυτόν. Dr. Mastelli, for example, told her work history, highlighting how the transition from teaching to managing a pharmaceutical company happened “almost by chance”.
The speakers then underlined the importance of high school studies, highlighting however how they are not essential for a certain faculty: they can constitute a greater or lesser help, but one’s commitment to achieving an objective always counts. This, finally, is the last pearl offered to young people: failure is fundamental to achieving success, it is a “launching springboard” whose importance must be reiterated, in contrast to the prevailing culture of constant and unbridled success, which is increasingly unreasonable. . The story of Martullo and his family has demonstrated this: they have changed paths in life many times, amidst failures and changes of mind, before arriving at their own fulfillment.
The entire high school sincerely thanks the Rotary Club of Sanremo and all the guests who attended today for their time and for their willingness to talk with the kids, teaching them a lot and offering a wonderful opportunity to listen to themselves with the speakers who ” speculi vice functions bantur”.
