Amendments to the municipal budget rejected, Legambiente’s disappointment

“During the last Avellino municipal council, held under the management of the council Party–Nargithe council minority presented three amendments on the municipal budget: unfortunately all three were rejected by the government majority. One of the amendments concerned the implementation of the Piedibus service, initially launched thanks to the experimentation promoted by the European Strategy Office itself, and implemented with a co-planning of Legambiente Avellino – Beehive. This service is now functioning on the IC Regina Margherita and undoubtedly deserves to be extended next year and also to other institutes to encourage sustainable mobility and create a city tailored to the needs of students.

Another proposed the elimination of single-use plastic from municipal public offices and relevant structures. The aim was to encourage the use of sustainable alternatives such as water totems for the supply of reusable water bottles. This proposal would have finally made the declaration of climate and environmental emergency, already approved in 2019 by the city council, executive and would have represented a significant step towards reducing plastic pollution.

The third amendment concerned the push for widespread monitoring of air quality, with the installation of control units in collaboration with the AURA network, as already decided by the city council in 2022. A fundamental investment to guarantee a healthier environment for citizens and raise awareness of issues related to air pollution and participate in the excellent research work led by the doctor Capozzi of the Montevergine Meteorological Observatory association.

“Air quality, sustainable mobility and reduction of single-use plastic are among the activities that Legambiente Avellino has been carrying out with daily commitment since its foundation in 2021 – declares the president of the club Antonio By Gisi -. For us they represent real priorities for the ecological transition of the territory. We regret that the city council did not demonstrate the necessary courage to implement these policies which would have had a positive impact on the lives of citizens and the environment and that, above all, no discussion took place regarding any of the three proposals.

The Festa majority voted unitedly and against these amendments, which for us find full support in the city community as demonstrated by the requests that emerged with the Traccia civic laboratory. It would have been right and respectful to justify the no to certain investments for the environmental future of the city. With the activists who animate the club on the municipal territory we are increasingly determined to ensure that these initiatives become cornerstones of the city’s political agenda and we are ready to demand this from the next municipal administration”.
