Francesco Hayez part of the DNA of the Palio di Legnano

Hayez’s large canvas on display in the Hall of Coats of Arms

Legnano A precious jewel that adds prestige and value to the Palio di Legnano. It’s about the large canvas (117 x 84 cm) by Hayez of 1859 accompanied by documents from the Historical Archive of the Palio Foundation. Its exhibition, hosted in the evocative setting of the Sala degli Stemmi of Palazzo Malinverni, was inaugurated on Friday 26 April, the evening in which at the Talisio Tirinnanzi Theater the Concert of the Fanfare of the 3rd Carabinieri Battalion “Lombardia” kicked off the celebratory events of the Palio di Legnano 2024.

In addition to the exhibition of the precious canvas, panels and digital implementations with content produced by the partner universities and institutions of the Palio di Legnano are also available.

With this exhibition we want to start celebrating the path of events that will culminate in 2026 by retracing the phases that led to the clash with Barbarossa” – the Professor’s introductory words Alessio Francesco Palmieri Marinoni who highlighted how the choice to exhibit a canvas by the painter Francesco Hayez is evidence of the fact of having “ancient, modern and contemporary in the name of Hayez. A painter who is part of the DNA of the Palio di Legnano. Tradition, modernity and continuity are the three fundamental elements of this exhibition choice. The canvas represents the Milanese Consuls tearing and trampling Barbarossa’s decree”.

To illustrate the motivation for the choice of canvas was Elena Lissonihistorian, art expert who contextualized the episode told in the canvas as a sign of reference to passion, to the Renaissance, to the search for affirming one’s identity.

Present at the opening evening were the institutions with the Mayor Lorenzo Radice, the Vice President of the Palio di Legnano Foundation, Luca Roveda, the Knight of the Carroccio, Andrea Monaci, the Grand Master of the College of Contrada Captains, Raffaele Bonito. Carlo Massironi, for the Cariplo Foundation.

The realization of the exhibition sees Banco BPM as a partner, which has always been close to cultural initiatives.
