UDINE – A very long journey, from Eastern Europe the truck had already arrived at the Gonars service area when it was stopped by traffic police officers. Once the tailgate of the Romanian articulated lorry was opened, the truth came out. Easter lambs crammed into the truck and forced into terrible conditions.
THE SANCTION
The operation took place on Monday afternoon, when the traffic police were busy carrying out checks on roads and motorways, with particular attention to verifying compliance with the legislation regulating the transport of live animals. Of the heavy vehicles checked, this was the only one that was not traveling in compliance with the existing transport regulations. For the latter, several violations were found, including the failure of the watering and ventilation system to function, the lack of suitability documentation for the driver/animal keeper, and the logbook in which all the information on the journey must be reported. Four administrative violations were contested for a total of 6500 euros which the driver had to settle immediately. Furthermore, the journey was interrupted by unloading the animals at a suitable rest area.
THE CONTROLS
In the month of March, a complex form of collaboration came to life between the Traffic Police and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region – Central Health Directorate – Prevention, Food Safety and Veterinary Public Health Service, aimed at verifying the legality of the transport of animals to which they should not be made to suffer unnecessary suffering. The checks were carried out with the fundamental contribution of the veterinarians of the Azienda Sanitaria Universitaria Friuli Centrale and Azienda Sanitaria Giuliano – Isontina. Animals, now consolidated, are considered by European standards to be sentient beings and, precisely because of this ethological condition, capable of feeling sensations such as stress, fear, discomfort, conditions that are sometimes incompatible with transport practices.
