We already told you about it when we proposed the ranking of the 5 largest internal combustion engines of all time, the Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96C It’s a massive sailing engine that dwarfs any competitor with its 109,000 horsepower and 7.6 million Newton-meters of torque.

Produced by the Finnish company of the same name, “Wärtsilä”, expert in the development of technologies for the energy and maritime sectors, this engine is 27 meters long, 13.5 meters high and weighs approximately 2,300 tons. This mastodon is equipped with 14 in-line cylinders and a total displacement of 25,480 liters, equivalent to 1,820 liters per cylinder.

The Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96C also stands out for its use of an advanced common-rail injection system and heavy oil combustion that releases all its power at a just 102 rpm. Thanks to these extraordinary numbers, the engine manages to push the Emma Maersk cargo ship, 397 meters long and loaded with containers, at a speed of almost 50 km/h.

However, the impressive performance of the Wärtsilä-Sulzer RTA96C is accompanied by equally powerful consumption: at full load the engine burns 3.8 liters of fuel per second, equal to almost 14 tons per hour. Despite this, its thermal efficiency exceeds 50%, higher even than any conventional automobile engine.

As regards the emissions, it is easy to imagine that an engine of this power generates astronomical figures. However, it is important to underline that there are very few ships equipped with this engine, and therefore their contribution in terms of global pollution is paltry, especially if proportionate to the quantity of goods it can transport (things must always be seen in proportion).

Building and maintaining an engine of this magnitude also involves considerable costs and challenges. The construction process can take up to a year and the cost can exceed 20 million euros. Returning to more “human” dimensions, if you like rankings, we have left you the best Made in Italy 4-cylinder engines ever.
