“Toyota and Mazda suspend sales due to crash test irregularities”

Mazda, for its part, stopped shipments of two models and discovered manipulations in the crash tests of two other models no longer in production. In the case of Yamaha the model under examination is a sports motorcycle. Honda found irregularities in noise and performance tests on some models for more than eight years through October 2017.

Shares of Toyota and Mazda fell 1.8% and 3.3%, respectively.

In the Daihatsu case, a subsidiary of Toyota, at the end of December serious irregularities emerged in the safety tests of the vehicles, which dated back to 1989. The investigation, conducted by an independent committee, had discovered that Daihatsu had manipulated the safety tests, in in particular those relating to the control of airbags and the structure of vehicle doors to avoid dangerous breakages during side impacts.

In particular, Daihatsu admitted to falsifying safety tests for 64 models, including those sold under the Toyota brand and in collaboration with other manufacturers such as Mazda and Subaru. These manipulations involved changing test results to ensure compliance with safety regulations, using different airbag control units than those sold to the public, and changing the internal structure of the doors to prevent them from breaking into sharp pieces during crash tests .

Daihatsu, known for making kei cars, resumed production in early May. The Toyota subsidiary withdrew from the European market in 2013 due to disappointing sales.
