The Geneva Motor Show closes definitively. This was decided by the Comité permanent du Salon international de l’Automobile Foundation. However, the appointment in Qatar remains, scheduled for November 2025. What pushes the organizers towards this difficult choice are “the too many uncertainties linked to the automotive industry and the erosion of the attractiveness recorded in the main European shows”. Too many unknowns to take the risk of investing further in the future. After 4 years of suspension due to Covid, the Salon had attempted to relaunch itself in 2024 but without great luck.
A painful choice
The Foundation defines the choice as ‘painful’, but also underlines the ‘efforts and determination’ with which in 2024 it attempted to regain the leading role that the Geneva Motor Show has always had since its inauguration in 1905. The moment of farewell, however, also becomes that of the showdown, with a clear accusation of the ‘disinterest shown by the producers’ at the Geneva Motor Show, added to which is a difficult industrial context and the competition from the Paris and Monaco motor shows, now favourites. compared to the Swiss exposure. And in fact the last edition was the total prerogative of new and rampant Chinese brands, with rare exceptions. Furthermore, the investments needed to bring Geneva back to being competitive are too high.
