in Uta the stories of the inmates become a book

Dreams, thoughts, emotions. But also fears and insecurities. There are the lives of 12 inmates of the Uta prison in the collection of short stories “Oltre”. The editorial productwhich is added to mural of the same namecreated in the women’s section of the “Ettore Scalas” prison, is the result of the collaboration between the “Socialismo Diritti Riforme ODV” association, the “Pettirosso” publishing house and the Liberevento Festival.

The aims of the editorial initiative were illustrated in a press conference, attended by some inmates, by Marco Porcu, Director of the Prison, Giuseppina Pani, head of the Education Area, by Federica Portoghese, Claudio Moica, Anna Lusso and Maria Grazia Caligaris. Rita Corda also contributed to the realization of the project. «In this book – said Claudio Moica – you will find reflections, dreams, hopes and illusions of women, without adjectives. People who add a touch of creativity to their experience that makes them infinite, far from stereotypes, capable of reading themselves and the world around them without fear. And inside every story there are our personal stories.”

«It was an experience of considerable emotional impact which – underlined Federica Portoghese – offered me an opportunity to compare with a reality that I did not know directly. Overall, it was a good lesson. I opened my eyes to prison life but above all I met affectionate and sensitive people, beyond any stereotype.” «Working side by side with people whose existence has been put to the test by life – added Anna Lusso – was not easy, especially at the beginning when it was essential to find a relationship method that respected individual personalities. The most interesting experience was precisely the creation of a “beyond” reality, discovering the common traits of women.”

For Daniela, on behalf of the detained authors«it was aparticularly engaging experience which allowed us to reflect and retrace moments of our lives. A moment of creativity and positive thoughts.” «Volunteering – highlighted Marco Porcu – has a fundamental role in the functioning of penitentiary institutions. The associations that operate in various capacities within the prison, including that of Uta, contribute significantly to carrying out those treatment activities on which the construction of the resocialization paths for prisoners is based, according to the principle contained in our Constitution. SDR, in particular, has worked effectively to improve the conditions of prisoners within the prison walls, with particular attention paid to female prisoners”.

«In these dramatic stories, the women – said Giuseppina Pani – express profound suffering, but also great courage and the desire for redemption. They ask for understanding, not pity, consideration and not prejudice, acceptance and respect, not judgement.” «The constant sharing of moods and feelings, in an environment where the deprivation of freedom is an unchangeable sign – concluded Maria Grazia Caligaris, president of Socialismo Diritti e Riforme – has allowed us and women to follow a creative path which allowed us to be together outside of space and time for a few hours. Moments of freedom in which we rediscovered our deepest identity. For this we say thank you.”
