USA, shooting in Detroit: at least 9 injured

(LaPresse) Nine people were injured after a man opened fire at a wading pool in Rochester Hills, a suburb of Detroit, Michigan, where families were gathered to escape the summer heat on Saturday. Among the injured there are two children, one of whom, aged 8, was hit in the head and is in critical condition. The child’s mother is also in very serious condition after being injured in the abdomen and leg. The police tracked the suspect to a house, but the man committed suicide. The other six victims, all aged 30 or older, are in stable condition. Among them is a husband and wife couple and a 78-year-old man. The shooting occurred shortly after 5pm in a city park with a recreational area where people can turn on splash pads and water fountains to play. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said the action appeared random: the shooter approached the park, walked to the fountain and fired 28 times, stopping several times to reload. The gunman “apparently was in no hurry. He calmly returned to his car,” the sheriff said. Officers quickly located a probable address and a car that matched the suspect’s, which was located at the residence: they surrounded the house and attempted to contact the suspect inside, without success. After using a drone, they entered the house and found the man dead by suicide. Another weapon was found inside the house. The man did not live in Rochester Hills and investigators still don’t know why he went to the pool. A handgun and three empty magazines were recovered at the scene of the shooting.
