Rome, 18 April 2024 – He escaped a violent attack Israeli air raid who had reduced his house to rubble last November, but his life ended tragically shortly afterwards, suddenly, during a launch of food aid. The little one in November Zein Oroq, 13 years old, had been pulled alive from his bombed house where digging was now underway to return the bodies of the victims to their families. His was a ‘miracle’ in the midst of so much death: in that bombing alone the boy had lost 17 relatives.

Last week, however, Zein was hit in the head by a relief package flew down from the sky of Gaza, while he was struggling to collect a can of broad beans, a pack of rice and some flour. The crowd blinded by hunger did not see the child and trampled him mercilessly to grab the box of aid. “The first time, when the house was hit, he came out from under the rubble with injuries to his head, hand and leg. God saved him,” said Zein’s grandfather, Ali Oroq. But this time the cruelty of war took his life away. “Zein had a cut on his head and was injured, as well as suffering fractures to his pelvis, skull and abdomen caused by the pressure of the people who trampled on him,” said his father Mahmoud. Zein was taken to hospital, but there was nothing more that could be done.

The authorities of the Gaza Strip have updated to The number of deaths was 33,970 since the beginning of the Israeli offensive on the Strip, of which most are children. The wounded however are 76.77. In the last 24 hours, 71 Palestinians have died and 106 have been injured.
