Bridgerton: the change to Francesca’s story approved by Julia Quinn, but doesn’t convince fans

Before becoming one TV series highly acclaimed at Netflix, Bridgerton was born as a literary saga written by Julia Quinn. Each volume tells the love story of one of the family members, exactly as happens in the TV series. The third season chose the story of Colin and Penelope, but at the same time it did not exclude the other brothers, partly also focusing on Francesca. Her story will have more space in the future but, in the meantime, she has made a subtle change by replacing Michael from the novel with Michaela from the TV series. A choice that, according to the showrunner Jess Brownellwas also approved by the author of the novels, as she told Teen Vogue:

To decide whether to tell a different story with Francesca, I spoke to Julia Quinn and got her blessing. We talked about the fact that with almost every single book there would be a portion of the fandom that would be disheartened to see their favorite characters change. I don’t think there’s a book that wouldn’t happen to it, so again for me it was more about story and character. Since Francesca’s book had a strong impact on me from that point of view, it seemed like a natural fit.

In the third season finale, Francesca marries John Stirling and she is ready to move to Scotland together with her cousin Michaela, who in the novel is instead cousin Michael, as well as Francesca’s future romantic interest after the premature death of her husband. It is not clear when this story will take place in the TV series, whether in the next season or whether we will have to wait even longer. And although the addition of Michaela was supported by Julia Quinn, the public did not exactly fully accept this turning point, also because in her novel the author also addressed the theme of infertility which, in this way, is unlikely to find space in the series.
