The points to be clarified about the Mondialpol robbery in Sassari.

On Friday evening, a commando of twenty bandits armed with Kalashnikovs attacked the headquarters of Mondialpol in Caniga, on the outskirts of Sassari, managing to escape with approximately twenty million euros. The group, dressed in black and equipped with bulletproof vests, did not hesitate to shoot at the police, ready to kill to ensure their escape.

During the firefight, both the Carabinieri and the traffic police were hit by a hail of bullets, but fortunately no one was injured thanks to the protection of the service cars. Even the Mondialpol agent on duty in the surveillance box was unharmed thanks to the bulletproof glass.

The commandos opened fire for several minutes, exploding at least 150 shots. Forensic investigators found numerous shell casings around the Mondialpol headquarters. The investigations, led by the director of the flying squad Michele Mecca and coordinated by the deputy prosecutor Elisa Succu, are examining the images of the security cameras to trace the movements of the gang before and after the robbery.

The anti-robbery plan had been activated on Friday morning, but had not detected anything suspicious. It is assumed that the bandits chose the day of the reopening of the “Chighizzu” tunnels to traffic to facilitate their escape towards the south of the island.

The assault took place shortly after 8pm, targeting the Mondialpol vault. However, the chest remained intact and the pension money remained safe. The bandits managed to steal ten bags of money collected during the day. In the escape, some wads of money were lost, but most of the loot was taken away. Just two weeks ago, Mondialpol carried out a security exercise, but on Friday night it was real.
